The Supreme Court today held a hearing regarding NEET-UG Paper Leak 2024. During the proceedings, the court posed several questions and requested answers from relevant authorities and experts. The apex court has directed the Director of IIT Delhi to form a team of three experts and submit a report on the correct answers for NEET-UG 2024.
The Supreme Court has sought expert opinions from IIT Delhi on the correct answer to a particular question. The court has asked the Director of IIT Delhi to form a committee of three experts by today.
NTA had awarded 4 marks by marking two options as correct, and the committee will study this and provide their opinion. The Supreme Court has instructed the experts from IIT Delhi to provide their opinion on the correct answer to this specific question by 12 PM on Tuesday.
The apex court considered the argument that there were two correct answers to a question, and marks were awarded for one correct option. The court noted that awarding or not awarding marks for the answer to a specific question affects the final merit list.
Petitioner claims NTA acknowledged the paper leak
During the hearing on petitions related to the controversy-ridden NEET-UG exam, the court noted its social impact. The petitioners’ lawyer told the Supreme Court that the National Testing Agency (NTA) had accepted that the question paper was leaked and shared via WhatsApp.
Petitioner’s lawyer Hooda stated in court that regarding the leak, Sanjeev Mukhiya is a gangster whose arrest is still pending. Solvers were called from Rajasthan, and the leak spread through WhatsApp. It is impossible that the leak was limited only to Patna; it is a complete systemic failure.
Another petitioner’s lawyer, Sanjay Hegde, questioned how one out of four students could get such marks. Hooda emphasized that it is a systemic failure, pointing out that a girl failing in Gujarat goes to Belagavi and scores 705 marks in NEET, while the CBSE curriculum is completely aligned with NEET.
CJI assures to address shortcomings
The Solicitor General stated, “Kota and Sikar are educational hubs where students live in hostels and study.” The CJI told the petitioner, “If there are any shortcomings, we will address them. You have primarily focused on Hazaribagh and Patna. There are some shortcomings in Bahadurgarh too. Where have you shown the systematic failure?”
The bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, Justice J B Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra heard over 40 petitions, including those filed by the NTA. NTA’s petitions request the transfer of pending cases related to the NEET-UG controversy in various high courts to the Supreme Court to avoid litigation overload.
Hearing on exam irregularities in Supreme Court
The analysis of data released by the NTA indicated that candidates allegedly benefiting from the paper leak and other irregularities did not perform well. However, there were more students with good performance in some centres. This data covered more than 3.2 million candidates from 4,750 centres. The Supreme Court heard several petitions regarding alleged irregularities and directed the release of the data accordingly.
